DJI Mavic Air: could this be the definitive drone?

DJI showcased its new Mavic Air drone in New York. The third quadcopter in this series is of similar quality to its predecessors and can also fold its arms for better portability. For its size, no competitor offers so much in terms of photo quality.

Release date and price

The DJI Mavic Air can be ordered through the official DJI website and is also available from other retailers. The drone is available in three colors: marengo grey, white and red.

We can buy the Mavic Air in a basic pack with remote control, protections, charger, cover, propeller replacement and a battery from US$ 799 (£769 in the UK). Often, one battery is not enough so there is a more complete pack available with three batteries, charger for four batteries and two propeller replacements from $ 999 (£949 in the UK).

Design and build quality

In essence, it is the same design concept that we’ve seen before with the Mavic but with reduced dimensions and more versatility, making it a bit more like the Spark. Many of its parts such as the ventilation system or the gimbal have had to be redesigned. At a glance, it’s also apparent that attention has been paid to aesthetics, too. The result is one of the most stylish quadcopters on the market without sparing aerodynamics.

Compared to the Mavic Pro, the brand’s best-selling drone, the Mavic Air is 41% lighter and takes up about half the space.

Fully folded, it is very compact and occupies more or less the palm of my hand. It won’t fit in a trouser pocket, but it can realistically be carried in many jacket pockets. In a rucksack it’s one more item, well protected inside its tight box.

With its arms outstretched it occupies just a little more volume than spark but much less than the Mavic Pro, and provides almost the same picture quality as its big brother.

Special features

Flight experience

In normal mode the flight is very relaxed and allows you to react without any problem, even to the risks posed by less experienced pilots around you. When controlling it from the phone the maximum distance is 80 m but with the remote control we can reach up to 4 km with line of sight. In sport mode it reaches up to 68 km/h, which makes it faster than the Mavic Pro.

AndroidPIT dji mavick air 155401 Un vuelo de lo más estable. / © AndroidPIT

The Mavic Air can fly up to 5000 m. a. s. l., so you won’t be able to take it to Everest but you could take some shots of Kilimanjaro. With a single battery, Mavic Air can stay in the air for up to 21 minutes, depending on the manufacturer. Of course if wind or other conditions are not ideal the time can be considerably reduced.

Flight control by gestures has been improved compared to that of the Spark. At Mavic Air the response is faster and includes new gestures such as takeoff, landing, pulling away and approaching. It’s better but it’s not perfect either. The recognition is done through the cameras so if the contrast of your palm with the background is not good the drone finds it more difficult to recognize your gestures.

Flight stability is much better thanks to a new system (VIO) that combines the compass and its cameras to maintain a more stable position.

The assisted flight has also been improved thanks to its 7 built-in cameras (1 main camera and 6 for stabilization). The Mavic Pro is capable of flying and dodging objects, i. e. moving forward and changing its trajectory to avoid a tree or rock but continuing to move forward.

The camera is mounted in a new 3-axis Gimbal, as we have already mentioned. On each axis we have a new part to reduce the vibrations that occur during flight from such small drones.

The sensor is a 1/2.3 inch, f/2.8 and 12 MP CMOS, similar to the Mavic Pro. Pictures are saved in both JPG and RAW, even if you shoot the picture in HDR. For video it offers 4K resolution at 30 fps, 2.7k at 60 fps and Full HD at 120 fps. With 120 fps we have the opportunity to take slow motion shots.

For photographs we have a new panoramic function capable of joining 25 photos together to create a spherical photo of up to 32 MP. The drone itself shoots multiple photos and binds them together in a spherical photo. the whole process can take about a minute.

At Mavic Air we have two new QuickShot modes: boomerang and asteroid. With them we can make videos to show in a panoramic way where we are. Smart capture has also changed. Until now you have marked a rectangle on the screen where the object to be followed was, but Mavic Air is able to recognize objects (cars, boats, etc.) and people. You just have to touch what you want me to follow. Recognition also works with QuickShot modes.

This is the first drone in the series to have 8 GB of internal memory, so forgive you if you forget the microSD card. The data transmission speed rises up to 100 Mbps between drone and smartphone, although they have to be close enough to reach that speed.

Early Verdict

The DJI Mavic Air is the drone with the best balance between portability, quality and price seen so far. It is the smallest drone capable of recording 4K at 30fps and with a panoramic mode capable of offering a snapshot similar to that of a 32 MP camera and fisheye. With the small difference that this flies. I must admit that I’m eager to be able to try it more thoroughly and test it to the limit.

The best FPV drone kits for flying at home

Flying a drone outdoors isn’t always easy. First, the majority of countries have restrictions on flying this type of device. Second, you’ll need a bit of practice, so you don’t crash it within the first two minutes. Lastly, there’s the price, which is usually pretty high. However, there are drones of every size and price out there. So, we’ve put together a list that solves all three of these problems: the best drones with FPV to fly in your house.

What is an FPV drone?

There are a ton of drones with cameras, and they come in all ranges, but not all drones support FPV cameras (First Person View). The options are narrowed down even more if you look for a small drone that you can fly inside. True FPV drones can be flown with a headset linked to the drone’s camera, and so it makes it feel as if you were actually inside the drone, flying it.

Plus, there are two types of FPV:

  • One where it transmits the video via a radio signal, and you need an FPV headset (some receivers allow you to use your smartphone as an FPV headset, the link is below).
  • The other transmits video via Wi-Fi, and you’ll need a smartphone that you put into a virtual reality headset.

Best indoor FPV drones

Parrot Mambo FPV (for smartphone)

The Parrot Mambo is the smallest drone from Parrot. It’s been on the market a while, and now it’s sold in a combo pack that includes a camera, to clip on the drone, and a 3D headset to link to a smartphone and control the drone in FPV.

TRNDlabs SKEYE Nano 2 FPV (for smartphone)

A mini-drone that’s only slightly bigger than your thumb, but that can be flown like a real helicopter. It’s controller actually acts like a box for transportation, and it comes with a stand to connect your smartphone in display mode. It also supports FPV mode if you put your device in a VR headset.

Potensic F181WH FPV (for smartphone)

This is another quad-copter that can transmit video to your smartphone and use a VR headset to fly it in FPV. The camera is 2MP, and it comes with 6-axis stabilization.

Potensic F181WH FPV

Blade Inductrix FPV (headset)

This is one of the smallest drones you can find but with some of the best steering out of any of them. It comes with a remote control and 4.3”-inch display, but to fly in FPV, you’ll need a UVC headset.

Blade Inductrix

Goolsky KINGKONG TINY6 (headset)

This small drone from Goolsky is pretty similar to the last one, but the battery is 50mAh bigger, which makes it 250 mAh in total. The camera resolution reaches up to 800TVL.

Goolsky KINGKONG TINY6 65mm 800TVL

Goolsky NIHUI NH-010 5.8G FPV (headset)

This Goolsky is a bit bigger than the last one with 82 mm between axes, and it comes with a 1 MP camera. The video is transmitted by the antenna on top. Plus, it can automatically return to where it took off from.

REDPAWZ R011 5.8G 40CH Micro FPV (headset)

The R011 is a little larger with a bit more than 8 inches between axes. It also comes with a controller and its own FPV headset.

REDPAWZ R011 5.8G 40CH Micro FPV

Eachine E010C camera set (headset)

This is one of the cheapest options you can find if you want to fly a drone in your house. You can easily connect a camera to the Eachine E010C to transmit video and fly it in FPV. All you’ll need is a headset.

Eachine E010

FPV Headset Eachine Mini VR-006

Adjustable headset with built-in antennas to receive UVC. The display is 3 inches wide with a resolution of 500 x 300. It comes with a 500mAh battery.

Eachine Mini FPV Gafas Headset VR-006

UVC video receiver for Android smartphones OTG XCSOURCE 5.8G

With this receiver, your Android smartphone, and a cardboard virtual reality headset, you can make your own low-cost FPV. The antenna is linear and doesn’t have much reach, but it would be perfect for flying around your house.

4 apps to try for your drone

Despite its size and increasing popularity, the drone market is far from being on the same level as the smartphone market. Nevertheless, many people now own a drone and enjoy spending countless hours flying the drones in their back yards or at a local park – perhaps unbeknownst to many is that this is sometimes against national regulations. Anyway, let’s assume you’ve found a big field somewhere that you can legally play with your drone. Which apps should you use? We’ve put together a short list of apps that anyone interested in drones should try out.

Google Earth

“Google has nothing to do with this, good grief!”. If you’re an avid AndroidPIT reader, you’ll know that Google is trying out many projects linked to this technology. It’s been a few years since it acquired the work done by Keyhole and turned it into Google Earth Viewer as we know it today, an app that allows you to view landscapes, buildings, vehicles and even people, all in 3D.

Thanks to its precise data, Google Earth is able to tell you whether an area is suited for flying your drone or not and, if needs be, you can quickly find another more suitable location nearby. it’s worth keeping in mind that there are strict laws in place in each country, which you should cast an eye over before your shiny toy takes to the air.

UAV Forecast

Now that you’ve found a place to fly your drone, you have to decide when the best time to fly is. Obviously, you can’t fly your drone if it’s windy and/or raining. Simply launch this app and you’ll receive a notification when the weather is suitable for flying. The app will also tell you some extra information such as current wind speed, etc.

If you already use weather apps, this app won’t offer you anything new. If you’re not familiar with such apps, you’ll appreciate the “OK, go fly” and “Not good to fly” features.

Flight radar

So, you know where to fly and you know what the weather will be, so you’re all set to fly your drone, right? Well, no, not yet. Now you have to make sure you’re not going to get in the way of any aircraft routes (planes, helicopters) – you can check this using the Flight radar app. You may think it unlikely that your drone would collide with one of these aircraft (especially if you’re not planning to fly too high) but it could happen if, for instance, one or several helicopters take off to attend to a medical emergency or for drills in a city.

Official apps

Now that the flight path is clear, there’s nothing standing in your way, have fun! Your drone will run on the manufacturer’s own app by default. Whether it’s DJI, Archos, GoPro, Parrot or something else, there will be an official app for the brand which will allow you to get the best out of flying your device. There are some third-party apps that are also worth trying out, particularly Litchi which allows you to play around with Mavic, Phantom, Inspire and DJI Spark drones.

  • App version: 4.1.2
  • App size: 38.0 MB
  • App compatibility: Android 4.4 or higher
