5 features you need to try with your Google Home Mini

Google Home Mini is the smallest version of Google Home, Google’s famous voice assistant. It comes with Google Assistant, the Google database that has many intelligent features. In this article we’ll tell you about some features that you should try out.

If you’re a loyal reader on our site, you may have noticed that we havea lot of articles on Google Home, Google Home Mini and Google Assistant. At times these articles have focused on the ‘niche’ features that these devices offer, such as how they can be connected to other devices around the house. But today we’d like to introduce you to some of Google Assistant’s more general features that are aimed at all users, besides listening to music and doing simple Google searches.

Listen to jokes

Let’s start with a service that is a little more known: Google Assistant’s sense of humor. Your virtual friend can cheer you up by telling you jokes that are worth retelling. Some of them are really funny, others are so dry that they’ll make you laugh anyway. So job well done, Google!

To make your GHM (Google Home Mini) tell you a joke, you just have to say: “OK Google, tell me a joke”. Don’t hesitate to tell the device its jokes aren’t funny. It won’t change its idea of what is funny, but it won’t be offended either…

Use third party services

Google Home and Google Home Mini allow you to interact directly with certain professional services. There are a few that work particularly well, and more should be added in the future.

You can access a wide variety of services through Google Home, including YouTube, Netflix, Domino’s Pizza, Uber, The Wall Street Journal, and NPR One. In practice, all you have to do is say that you want to talk to the service (by saying its name, of course) and that’s it. You can’t buy a plane ticket through Google Home, but you can search for flight information.

Using Google Home Mini to set reminders

Whether you have a goldfish memory or not, we all need to write ourselves little post-its from time to time. But that was the time before the Google Home Mini. You can ask Google to remember something for you. For example, if you say that your friend Bryan is in the kitchen, when you ask it again where Bryan is, it will know how to answer you.

Seriously, GHM can remember anything and everything. Ask it to remember anything (buy bread, a quote, an appointment, anything at all), and it will remember it from that point on.

AndroidPIT google home mini review 3239 Google Home can remember things for you (but keep using your memory, it’s important). / © AndroidPIT

Play (real games)

You might be thinking, ‘What’s the point of playing against a voice?” Of course, playing against a voice interface might only amuse children, because Heads or Tails and a Crystal Ball won’t keep our interest for very long. Musical chairs shouldn’t really be that fun for adults (or is it?), but you can talk to the famous web genius Akinator. He may not have you rolling on the floor laughing, but it’s a lot of fun.

You should bear in mind that with the help of a Chromecast you can play games that are a bit more… fun, let’s say. This lets you abandon playing with a voice assistant and you can opt for good games that you like. You can find them in the Play Store. It’ll feel a bit reminiscent of the Wii.

Use Google Home Mini as a timer and event reminder

If, like me, you’re really easily distracted, you might enjoy this feature of Google Home. You’re cooking, you’ve put your food in the oven and have to wait for half an hour, but then an old friend calls and the conversation just goes on and on. Fortunately, if you’ve warned Google Home Mini beforehand, it will remind you to take your dish out of the oven.

So that wraps up our 5 features to try out. Have you discovered any cool things the Google Home Mini can do? Let us know in the comments!

Honor View 10: Tips and tricks you need to know about

Those of you who are already familiar with Huawei know that it offers many customization options. You can activate gestures, change the background, enable the app drawer, customize navigation links, the font size, the display color, and so on and so forth.

If you’re looking for these kinds of ‘basic’ tricks, I’ll refer you to the article on the Huawei P10 tricks because most of them are also applicable to the View 10. And below I’ll go through some tips not included in the previous article that will you allow you to optimize your device.

Face recognition for notifications and unlocking the device

Honor already released a software update to make this feature more complete and to allow users to unlock the device through face recognition. Whether you’ve received the update or not, I recommend that you activate it, at least to have access to the contents of the notifications from the lock screen.

Go to Settings > Safety and Privacy > Face Recognition.

Histen Audio Effects for the most demanding ears

Just like in the Honor 9, you can experience 3D sound on the View 10. To do this, however, you’ll have to connect wired earphones to your device, since it doesn’t support the use of Bluetooth headphones. The Histen Huawei Audio Effects can’t be accessed under Settings > Audio until you plug in headphones.

Private space: Since everyone has something to hide

With this feature you can create a kind of private island, which is only accessible with a password and a different fingerprint from the one normally used. This is a useful feature for those of us who often share smartphones with friends or colleagues and for people who generally want to make sure that data, photos and apps stay away from prying eyes.

You can learn how it work in this article and activate it by accessing Settings > Security and Privacy > Private Space.

Lock a few apps

If Private Space is too drastic of a solution for you, you can rely on App Lock in Settings > Security and Privacy. You can set a password or fingerprint to open some applications on your Honor View 10. You’ll find a list of apps that allow you to manually lock them by moving the cursor to the right.

Scroll through your photos while charging

Here’s a gem that you may not know about. It’s called Screensaver, and when it’s enabled, the device will automatically scroll through your photos while your smartphone is charging. You just have to allow access to photos and multimedia content and select the source folder as well as the duration of your slideshow. Here’s one small extra tip: place your View 10 on a stand to better enjoy your photos.

Avoid distractions in the Game Suite

Those gamers out there will appreciate this feature allowing you to focus on the game in front of you, as well as saving battery power. Simply open the pre-installed app on your Honor View 10 and then decide how to customize your gaming experience to your liking. You can:

  • Lock navigation keys
  • Choose between Game Mode (optimized performance at the expense of power consumption), Smart Mode (balance of performance and battery consumption) or Power Saving Mode (reduces power consumption as well as gaming performance).
  • Activate uninterrupted games to hide notifications on the screen, except for those related to alarms, calls and low battery alerts.

Turn the View 10 into a remote control

The View 10 integrates an infrared sensor, which when using the pre-installed app on your device will allow you to use your smartphone as if it were a remote control. Look for the app called Remote Control, click on Add Remote Control, select the device you want to connect to and follow the instructions below to pair the devices. There is also a menu with a few customization options.

Use your voice to call, find the device and more

Activating voice commands can be useful for all situations where your hands are busy. Go to Settings > Intelligent Support > Voice Command and select your preferred option. To be able to make calls from the unlock screen or search for your device, you will first need to click on Voice Reactivation and say ‘Dear Honor’ three times in a quiet setting. The process is the same as required by Google Assistant, only the magic words have changed and you can decide to customize them.

I personally find this feature useful to make a quick call. Just hold down the lower volume button for a few seconds from the lock screen and say the name of your contact after the beep to start your call. Try to get as close as possible to the microphone or the voice recognition may not work properly.

And more interestingly, you can also search for your device just by saying ‘Dear Honor, where are you?’.

Full screen display for apps and games

The View 10 uses a 18:9 screen, but not all applications use it by default. You can change this setting to utilize the full screen display by doing the following:

  • Launch an app, click on Full Screen Display at the bottom of the screen and then click OK to confirm.
  • Go to Settings > Display > Full screen display and then manually select the applications where you want to activate this feature. Please note, however, that if you do not optimize for this type of display, black borders will appear around the frame of the app.

Cancel a sent SMS (in case you need to reconsider)

For those of you who still prefer sending a text message instead of using WhatsApp or Telegram, it may be useful to activate the Cancel Send function in the Messaging settings. Once activated, you are able to cancel sending a message by clicking on the message within six seconds of sending it.

The Honor View 10 can be customized in many ways. This article will be followed up with an article especially for the camera, so you’ll know how to tweak the double camera integrated in your smartphone. Need to pass some time? Here are the best card games for Android

It’s Winter: it’s cold out, it’s raining and sometimes it’s even snowing. So why not stay at home and indulge in a guilty pleasure that some might find a bit outdated? That’s right, playing card games. Don’t have anyone to play against? Then try your luck against Android.

As the name suggests, this game is meant to be played alone. It’s so well-known because Microsoft has always included it on Windows. Of course, a lot has changed as the years have gone by, but the game has stayed the same.

The game we’ll show you in this article is a variation of Windows Solitaire (they all look alike, don’t they?). You can play this old-fashioned loner game on your smartphone or tablet. I assume I don’t need to explain the rules…

  • App version:
  • App size: 51.22 MB
  • App compatibility: Android 4.1 or higher
  • Price: free

Multiplayer Tarot Game

This tarot game may remind you of the fortune tellers who use it to predict the future (although not always correctly). This game is somewhat different and refers to the traditional French card game. It can be played with either 3, 4 or 5 players. It’s most fun with 5 because then you really have to play as a team.

The app is the Multiplayer Tarot Game, which as its name suggests, lets you play online with and against other players. The game is free and you can play against either other people or test your luck against a CPU. You can choose your table by playing with chips, a system that the application uses to monetize the game.

Poker Offline

Poker has been booming in recent years. The game has several variants and Texas Hold’em is undoubtedly the most famous. The problem with many poker games is that you have to play online, although some people would prefer to play offline.

There is one solution: Poker Offline. As you can guess from the name, you can play it offline without an internet connection, but still have the benefit of certain functions (there is no limit on the amount of money you can win, games start with 20,000 chips, etc.). In short, anyone who wants to play offline poker will appreciate this app. If you want to play online, you can do so as well.

War: The card game!

War is the best-known card game for children. We all remember playing it at one time or another. Since the rules are so simple we don’t need to repeat them here. Did you know that this game also exists on Android?

The game is modestly called ‘War’ and lets you rediscover the game that rocked your childhood. The icing on the cake is that you can choose to play alone against the computer or with another player, so you can kill some time together if you’d like. This app will surely make all children happy.

  • App version: 1.0.1
  • App compatibility: Android 2.3 or higher
  • Price: completely free of charge

War (Card Game) Install on Google Play

This game is also one of the veterans from Windows. It of course doesn’t quite enjoy the popularity of Solitaire or other games mentioned above, but it’s just as interesting. The rules may be a bit more complex, but it’s really not too hard to learn.

This game is played with 4 players (although the 4th player is hidden behind an ad) and the opponents are generated by the computer. Unlike most games, the goals is to get as few points as possible, and the game ends when one player reaches 100 points. Whoever has the least points wins. The app is simple and intuitive, so if you don’t know the rules you should be able to learn them quickly.

  • App version: 2.5.6
  • App size: 57.27 MB
  • App compatibility: Android 4.1 or higher
  • Price: free with in-app purchases

Of course there’s also Bridge, Free Cell, Black Jack and many more. Are there any card games for Android that you particularly enjoy? Let us know in the comments!

Poll results: How much storage do you need for your smartphone?

While it may not be the first thing to cross your mind when evaluating which smartphone to buy, storage capacity is one spec that can make or break a user’s smartphone experience. In our poll last week, we asked what you consider to be the minimum storage amount you’ll accept in a smartphone. Here are the results.

Smartphone users require more and more storage with each passing year thanks to system updates, photos, videos and other files increasing in both size and quantity. Once you get down to just a few GB left, you’ll find yourself hesitating to download new apps and take new photos, and constantly trying to find old ones to get rid of to make space. Lack of storage space can turn an otherwise great phone into a nightmare.

In our poll last week, we asked what your minimum storage requirements are, and the top result, with 40 percent of the vote, was 64 GB. That seems to be just right for most users. 128 GB was the second most popular choice with 21 percent of the vote, leaving the smaller end of the storage spectrum decisively in the dust, finally. Let’s hope manufacturers take notice of that! 32 GB and 16 GB are hardly contenders anymore, with just 12 and 3 percent of the vote, respectively. 256 GB is still off most people’s minds, for now, with only 10 percent saying this is their desired minimum storage amount.

smartphone minimum storage poll results Poll results. / © AndroidPIT

It’s not just about internal storage, though. 13 percent of voters said that the amount of internal storage didn’t matter to them as long as the smartphone has microSD support. Cloud storage hasn’t quite caught on as a favored, reliable storage method, with only 2 percent of voters saying it matters more to them than internal storage.

The comments reveal that users often use a combination of internal storage, microSD cards and cloud services for all their storage needs. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages, of course.

Buying a phone with more internal storage can cost significantly more. Cloud storage sometimes isn’t accessible, with mobile data dead zones and the near-extinction of reasonable unlimited data plans. Even microSD cards have their downsides, despite offering a ton of storage space for relatively little money compared to what the equivalent internal storage would cost.

One commenter, BHO, had plenty of storage with a 16 GB Honor 7 with a 32 GB SD card and cloud storage, however, it was too much of a pain to manually move apps after each update, which ruined the experience. BHO has since upgraded to a 128 GB Huawei Mate 10 Pro and is much happier. Still, several users said they wouldn’t consider buying a device without microSD card compatibility.

Do you agree with the results? Should 64 GB be the bare minimum for internal storage on new smartphones from now on? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Huawei’s air gestures could be the revolution smartwatches need

Huawei seems to be well on its way to solving the biggest issue with smartwatches: their difficult to interact with displays. A patent filed by the company reveals a new way of interacting with smartwatches that isn’t constrained by small display size. These air gestures could be the revolution that smartwatches desperately need.

As pictured in the patent filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization, and spotted by LetsGoDigital, the new gesture input system would have sensors that can scan and recognize gestures on the back of the hand and around or above the display. There are several different ways this could manifest itself, and in terms of ease of interaction, they all sound better than attempting to tap absurdly tiny buttons on the face of a smartwatch display. This could be what the exactly smartwatch market has been waiting for.

air gestures huawei Potential Huawei smartwatch air gestures. / © Huawei

These new input methods include tapping a much wider surface above the display or hand, swiping above the hand, drawing shapes or letters on the back of the hand, or tapping around the sides of the watch in one of four directions to make a selection. And those are just what was explicitly pictured in the patent. Potentially, other gestures like double taps, long presses or multiple fingers at once could be recognized. Pair this with another innovative design concept like touch sensitive bezels, as found by LetsGoDigital in another recent Huawei patent, and you might just have a smartwatch that’s not impossibly frustrating to interact with.

huawei touch bezels Touch sensitive bezels could appear in the next Huawei smartwatch. / © Huawei

As is often the case with truly innovative mobile tech patents, it may never see the light of day. But, if we’re lucky, air gestures could appear in the next Huawei smartwatch. Huawei isn’t alone in this sort of endeavor, though. Even Apple is working on similar new input methods for its devices. TechTastic spotted a patent for what might be a future Apple Pencil that can draw on any surface, including the air, by using some kind of camera or sensor to track its movements.

What new features would you like to see in the Huawei Watch 3, or other upcoming smartwatches? Would air gestures make buying a smartwatch worth it for you?

Poll: How much storage do you need for your smartphone?

When buying a new phone, certain specs come to mind first for different people. Some users are primarily concerned with battery capacity, others want top camera quality, a stunning display, the latest processor or the most RAM. But, there’s one spec that will make your smartphone experience a lot better, and it might be off your radar: storage capacity.

Each year, I notice more and more storage space being taken up by the system, and from photos and videos I’ve taken. After several OS updates and upgrading to a smartphone with a better camera and 4K video, my free storage space is dwindling faster than ever. Not to mention the games that take up over 1 GB each, offline Netflix episodes and my Spotify Premium offline playlists. With just a few GB of storage left, I’m hesitating to download new apps and I’m constantly purging old photos to get more space. The anxiety is making me hate my smartphone and want to upgrade, despite having an otherwise pleasant experience with it.

For me, 16 GB is definitely no longer enough, 32 GB is barely sufficient and 64 GB is just right. For people who like to keep all of their photos and videos on their phone instead of Google Photos like me, anything less than 128 GB might not cut it. If brands are going to release smartphones with just 32 or even 64 GB of internal storage, they should really include a microSD slot. LG released the LG G6 flagship to the US market last year with only a 32 GB storage option available, and without the microSD card slot, that move would have been crazy. Even so, not all recent flagship smartphones offer microSD storage, as was the case with the OnePlus 5T, for example.

We want to find out how much storage space you feel you need in your smartphone. Cast your vote in the poll below, and let us know why you chose your answer in the comments. If you use a combination of internal storage, microSD and cloud storage, tell us why.

Flick Launcher

This version is yet to be published, so it probably isn’t running smoothly yet. As you probably guessed by the name, this app is a launcher. By pressing down and holding for a second on the icons, you will reveal a menu which is typical of Android Oreo. There is no need to own a Pixel phone or have the latest Android Oreo software with this launcher!

Supdadupa has gained popularity mainly because of one thing: it’s hilarious. If you look at the comments on the Play Store you realize how much of a hit this game was even before the era of smartphones (not really, but you can see for yourselves on the game description, we found it quite amusing!). Basically the aim of the game is to see who has the most time on their hands, as the winner will have had their finger on the screen for the longest time. That’s all there is to it.
