Does your battery drain too fast? 8 problems and solutions.

1. Power-hungry apps

First thing’s first. We need to learn the behavior of our battery to locate the problem and subsequently to find a solution. To get a better understanding of what makes your battery tick, go to Settings > Battery. If you find apps on this screen that are using up a lot of battery then, think about whether you really need them. You could save battery life by removing the ones you don’t depend on. Check out this AVG report on the apps that drain the most battery – you may be running several of these on your phone.

If you want to go into more detail about your smartphone’s battery usage, you’ll find a number of apps in the Play Store that provide statistics and detailed information on battery consumption. We recommend GSam Battery Monitor.

Once the app is installed, it takes a couple of days to gather data on your smartphone and battery usage, then after that it’ll give you a great overview over what’s using how much battery on your device.

2. Replace your old battery with a new one

If your smartphone is a couple of years old or more, the sad truth is that its battery might be simply dying a natural death. If you don’t have a lot of background processes running and are keeping your screen brightness down, then it’s worth reading our review of your phone, and comparing our battery experience to yours.

If yours is considerably lower, it might be time for a change. Manufacturers often say that a battery should perform well for up to 1000 charges, but that depends on many factors.

If you have a smartphone with removable battery, it’s simply a case of buying a new one (a major advantage to choosing a smartphone with removable battery). Unfortunately, the removable battery is fast falling out off favor with manufacturers for a variety of reasons. If your phone has a non-removable battery then type “remove [your phone name] battery” in the AndroidPIT search bar and we might have a guide showing you how to remove it. Be warned though, that this will void your smartphone warranty.

3. Your charger does not work 

If after a full night’s charging, you notice that your smartphone battery drains super-fast, then it’s worth checking first thing in the morning whether it actually fully charges. If not, then you’re looking at a defective charger.

Check whether your cable works with another phone, or conversely whether your phone works with another cable. If your charger proves to be faulty, remember to only buy chargers from reputable manufacturers, otherwise you risk becoming the subject of those all-too-frequent news stories about phones setting houses and people on fire. 4. ‘Android system’ using too much battery

One of the biggest battery consumers on your phone is the ‘Android system’ service. This keeps your whole device running smoothly, so naturally uses a lot of battery, but it shouldn’t be more than 25 percent. If it’s using more than this, then you could have a problem.

This problem could be resolved by downgrading your Android device to an older Android version. We’ve got plenty of downgrade guides on AndroidPIT, so just search “downgrade [your phone name]” on AndroidPIT Should this fail, then you may have to factory reset your device. Drastic though this may sound, it could ultimately be a simpler solution than downgrading your device, because to do that you need to flash it, which can lead to complications.

5. Google Play Services battery drain

Google Play Services is another service that consumes a lot of battery. Unfortunately, you can’t stop it because it’s a crucial Android feature which lets your apps communicate with each other on your phone. Still, you can bring it under control.

Go to Settings > Applications > All > Google Play Services. Here, tap the Clear cache button. This should refresh Google Play Service and stop it draining your battery. Repeat this process once a month.

6. Switch off auto-brightness

Don’t act all innocent. The law states you should never use automatic brightness, but you’ve been abusing it behind closed doors. Though automatic brightness is usually sophisticated enough to produce a comfortable viewing setting for each individual, it is not capable of selecting the optimal setting. How could it? Smartphone sensors don’t know the strength of your and your great aunt’s eyesight, do they?

Setting the brightness level yourself will invariably provide better battery life, so long as you set it to a comparatively low value. Fortunately, the Android platform makes it very easy to adjust brightness settings, and it can easily be adjusted from the quick-settings menu with a two-fingered downward swipe.

7. Shorten your screen timeout

It’s a well-known fact that the display is one of the biggest sources of battery drain on an Android phone, so managing it is crucial to its longevity. The “screen-timeout” or “sleep” setting determines how long your display will stay awake for after it has been engaged with; if your screen remains on while you aren’t looking at it, it’s wasting precious battery life. Best to set it to the lowest value you are comfortable with in regular use, and only change it when you need to. 

Don’t to worry about apps which require the screen to be on permanently while in use, like games or eBook readers, they know to stay awake no matter what your setting is.

8. Watch out for widgets and background apps

Widgets are stone cold battery killers, mercilessly updating in the background while you go about your business. You might be under the impression that a simple news ticker and weather app won’t do much harm, but you’d be wrong, and once you start adding more and more, it will seriously take your battery to task. 

Consider the frequency with which you want your widgets and background apps to update. You could potentially set your weather app to update every hour, but the more frequently it updates, the more power it requires. If you only check your weather twice per day, try setting the refresh interval to every 12 hours instead.

Many apps will prompt you to set up the update frequency when you first place them on your homepage, though you can return to their settings at any time to alter them. Just be aware that some apps don’t offer this at all, and these may be real battery assassins to watch out for.

Google Pixel problems and solutions

The Google Pixel is attracting a lot of attention and, once again, it’s for all the wrong reasons. A number of Pixel users running Android Oreo have been reporting that they’re getting notifications that their “mobile data has run out” even when it hasn’t. Google is aware, but there’s no fix yet. Get the details below.

Google Pixel “mobile data has run out” problem on Oreo

For some Pixel users on Oreo, mobile data stops working randomly and the phone turns off all cellular data as if you’ve run out of your carrier data allowance for the month even when you haven’t. This is accompanied with a notification saying that “mobile data has run out.” Pixel devices are also cutting data access for users who have a plan which allows unlimited access to certain services, like WhatsApp, even after the main data allowance runs out. This issue is happening with in many countries, including Mexico, Nicaragua, Honduras, Indonesia, Romania and more.

Google is aware and it’s already working on a fix, according to one employee. We don’t yet know when to expect it, though hopefully it won’t be long as Google says it’s a high priority. So, the only solution for now is to flash back to Android Nougat while you wait for an update to fix the problem, or just live without mobile data temporarily.

Google Pixel microphone problem

The Google Product Forum is the information hub for anything and everything to do with the Google Pixel and Pixel XL, and in recent months some users have been reporting catastrophic issues with the microphones on both of Google’s flagship devices. People posting on the forum have said that resorting to a factory reset doesn’t resolve this issue, but the fault hasn’t affected the camera app.

Google has confirmed that this is a hardware issue, so software updates will do nothing to resolve this new microphone problem. Google has said that they are now engaging in a more rigorous process during the general manufacturing process and when certifying refurbished phones, in order to ensure they no longer have this defect.

Happily, for those of you who have purchased a new Pixel or Pixel XL in the last month or so, your device shouldn’t be affected. If you are experiencing any issues, Google recommends you seek a replacement for the device or contact the retailer where you purchased it.

Some owners of the Google Pixel and Pixel have been experiencing issues with their device’s audio in the past few months. In particular, the sound quality of the speakers is bad when the volume is set to its three highest levels, making a scratching, crackling sound. The result is that certain applications’ audio becomes unusable. To see if your device is affected, turn your device up to its top three volume levels, and try playing music or other audio.

What was once believed to be a hardware problem has now been fixed by a software update from Google. The February 2017 monthly security updates for the Pixel and Pixel XL has brought a fix to the issues with crackling speakers at the highest volume settings. If you’re still experiencing the issue, try getting the latest updates to fix the problem.

After Google shipped out the February 2017 security update for the Pixel and Pixel XL , quite a few users noted that their devices were experiencing bluetooth connectivity issues. Users reported that their bluetooth connections were dropping as it seemed like bluetooth was being disabled at random. Some users also reported that after re-booting theirs phones, they couldn’t enable bluetooth over the shade shortcut, thus forcing them to go into the settings to change it there. While the security patch fixed the Pixel’s audio issues (mentioned above), it seems like it was also the cause for the bluetooth connectivity issues.

Google acknowledged this problem fairly quickly and has stated that their support team have already identified the issue. News has spread in the support forum that the issue has apparently been fixed.  Thankfully it seems like you don’t need to wait for an update as it was a server-side solution. 

I just got word that Google has just finished putting a fix in place for this issue on our end – no downloads or updates to your devices or apps are needed.

Google Pixel hardware changes?

While the Pixel had a few minor teething problems at launch, 9to5Google reports that Google’s actually been selling devices with a slightly revised hardware setup that could well include the fix for the microphone issue. According to one device owner, their handset has ‘Rev.B’ printed on its packaging. 

That’s not exactly uncommon – small problems are often addressed with minor hardware tweaks post-launch – but unfortunately there’s no firm details on what could have been changed for these devices. We’ve asked Google to spill the beans and will update if we hear back.

Having problems with your LG G6? Try these solutions

Even brand new, high-end phones have their share of issues, and the LG G6 is no exception. Users have reported problems with software bugs, and even some which may be due to hardware. If you’re getting weird error messages, having problems with your fingerprint scanner or having other issues, don’t worry. We have the solutions to all the most common LG G6 issues here.

LG G6 “Device corrupt” error

Users have experienced their LG G6 devices randomly crashing, and when they restart, an error message is displayed which says, “Your device is corrupt. It cannot be trusted and may not work properly.” The screen gives instructions to visit a link (g.co/ABH), on another device, which explains the error’s meaning. The error will appear for about 10 seconds, then your phone should continue booting as usual.

While this can be expected to happen due to Nougat’s Verified Boot process if you unlock the bootloader, it is happening even to users who haven’t done so. There’s no official solution for this problem yet, but an update may come in the future. Until that day comes, restarting the phone can fix the problems, but it may take a few tries. If that doesn’t work, you may have to resort to a factory reset.

LG G6 “Moisture in USB port” warning

Users have reported getting the “Moisture in USB port” warning message, even when there’s been no chance of moisture. Additionally, sometimes users are also getting the USB plugged in notification and sounds over and over again, even when there’s nothing plugged in. These issues of phantom moisture and notifications when nothing is plugged in can be caused by debris or a bad charging cable. First, you should try another cable to see if the issue is with your charging cord. One user says washing the phone and cleaning the USB port solved the problem. So, you can also try soaking the phone and carefully cleaning the port with a soft cloth to dislodge any dirt or dust, then dry the phone thoroughly.

LG G6 Headphone jack problem

Some users have reported issues with the headphone jack of the LG G6. Static noise in the background and random pausing, playing or skipping songs were among the complaints, along with activating Google Assistant unnecessarily. Even replacing the headphones, or the phone itself, doesn’t seem to fix the issue for everyone. Not all hope is lost though. If this issue sounds familiar to you, that’s because a similar headphone jack problem happened with the LG G3, and luckily, a fix has already been found. Using headphones with a built-in microphone prevents these strange, unwanted behaviors and the static noise. So, save yourself some hassle, and just try some new headphones with a mic.

LG G6 Fingerprint scanner issues

Some are finding the fingerprint scanner of the LG G6 to be slow, or to take several tries to recognize the registered fingerprint. That’s not the case for most users, who find the scanner to be quick and accurate, as it should be. So, if you’re phone is slow to unlock, there’s a problem. Try deleting the registered fingerprint, and then setting up the scanner again with your fingerprint. You can even register the same fingerprint twice, for a better chance of it being recognized. If that doesn’t do the trick, try clearing the cache in Settings > General > Phone management > Device storage > Internal storage, then clear Cached data.

LG G6 “OK Google” not working

The voice command for launching Google Assistant isn’t working for some LG G6 users. If you find that saying “OK Google” produces no response, and you’re unable to successfully retrain the voice model, then you’ll want to try the following solution, which involves clearing the cache and retraining voice recognition. If you want “OK Google” to work again, go to Settings > Apps > Google app > Storage > Manage space, then Clear all data. After that, you can retrain the voice model, and your problem should be solved.

Users have reported problems with the touchscreen responsiveness, volume control, battery drain, notification delays and third-party launchers. Huawei Mate 9: Touchscreen not responding

Some users have reported issues with their Mate 9’s touchscreen. Namely, the display is unresponsive or registering taps unnecessarily on the right and left sides. Luckily, this annoying issue has been fixed by a software update that rolled out last December. If you’re still experiencing the problem, make sure you’ve got the latest software update by going to Settings > About phone > System updates.

Huawei Mate 9: No volume control on lock screen

If you’re listening to music on your phone, you expect to be able to control the volume using the buttons on the side when the screen is locked. But, users report that their Mate 9 requires you to unlock the screen to adjust the volume. For some reason, this happens when using Spotify or some other music apps. This issue may be addressed in the future with a software update, but for now, the solution is more of a workaround. Huawei has told Digital Trends that only two apps are supported: Huawei Music and Google Play Music. That’s bad news for Spotify users, who will have to switch apps, but at least there’s some way around this problem.

Huawei Mate 9: Battery drain issue

Users have reported that, in spite of the Mate 9’s good battery life, their particular devices are draining battery at an unusual rate and even overheating in some cases. Huawei told Digital Trends that is plans to provide enhancements to fix these issues in a future update, so make sure you’ve updated your software. If that doesn’t fix the problem, check to make sure your apps are optimized. Go to the Battery section of your Mate 9’s Settings, the go to the Battery usage details page to find out if any apps are taking up too much battery. If there’s an app that’s behaving strangely, get rid of it, or simply update it to try to fix the problem. Also, you’ll want to use the Mate 9’s Optimise tool to make your battery last longer.

Huawei Mate 9: Third-party launcher reverts to default

Particularly bothersome for those that like to use custom launchers like Nova, the Mate 9 tends to revert back to the default EMUI launcher whenever an app is closed. That means, the only way to get the alternative launcher to work is to re-enable it over and over again. There are some workarounds when you want to use third-party launchers, but they’re not perfect. You can try locking your launcher to the Recent Apps list by going to the Recent Apps’ Settings menu and tapping the lock icon for the launcher – after you’ve recently opened it of course. You can also try disabling Bluetooth on the device, or enabling the ‘aggressive desktop’ feature of launchers like Nova to see if that helps.

Huawei Mate 9: Delayed notifications

A lot of users, as evidenced by this dramatically long XDA Developers forum thread, haven’t been receiving app notifications as they should. They’re either not getting them at all, or they’re delayed, though the badges still appear on the app icons on the home screen. An update was released to fix this problem, but if that doesn’t quite do it for you, there’s more you can do. Check to be sure that Do Not Disturb is disabled. Next, try going to the Phone Manager app, then to the Mobile Data section. Once there, scroll down to the bottom and tap Data Saver. Then you can allow unrestricted data access to specific apps which you want to get notifications from that require a data connection (like email or WhatsApp).

HTC U11 problems and solutions

The HTC U11 is certainly one of the best premium phones of 2017, rivaling even the Galaxy S8 in terms of performance. Users are drawn to its unique Edge Sense feature and eye-catching design, making it a popular choice. Though, the new HTC flagship isn’t without its flaws. Here are a few of the top complaints against the device, and the solutions to those problems.

Edge Sense, the star feature of the HTC U11 which allows you to control certain functions of your phone with a squeeze, has been a bit problematic for some users. After setting the sensitivity of Edge Sense, sometimes it can be either too sensitive or not sensitive enough, to an extreme degree. This can be fixed by reconfiguring the force of the squeeze you prefer. However, if the problem persists, you will have to be patient, as HTC is sure to bring more updates to its new Edge Sense feature in the future.

HTC U11 unable to receive calls or messages on Verizon

In the US, owners of the unlocked HTC U11 should be able to use their devices on Verizon Wireless. On paper, the device is compatible. But in practice, users have been experiencing issues. Users have reported that they are unable to receive calls and text messages on their devices. Luckily, there are ways to fix it, according to Android Authority.

To start, check with Verizon customer service to make sure your U11 was activated properly, as that may be the problem. If that wasn’t the issue, there are other solutions. If you’re using your old Verizon Wireless SIM card, you’ll need to get a new one from the carrier to begin receiving calls properly. While this may fix the problem with receiving text messages in some cases, in others you will need to call Verizon Wireless and ask them to turn off CDMA-less Provisioning, which is blocking the messages.

HTC U11 video audio sync issue

Some users have been having issues when streaming videos from YouTube or watching videos from WhatsApp. The video will get stuck and restart after a few seconds, as is common with streaming. But once it restarts, the audio and video will be out of sync. To fix this, you can wipe the cache partition. Here’s how: 

Reboot into Recovery Mode by holding down the power, volume up and home buttons all at once. You’ll see the HTC logo pop up, and then from the recovery menu you can use the volume up or down button to select Wipe cache partition and press the power button to execute the command. Then you can restart the phone, and the audio sync issue should go away when you’re watching videos.

HTC U11 MicroSD card corrupt or unmounted error

If you’ve been getting errors that say your MicroSD card has been unmounted, you’re not alone. HTC is rolling out a software update to fix the issue, so make sure your device is up to date, and it should be resolved.

If you’re getting an error that your MicroSD card is corrupt, try using it in another phone to make sure the problem isn’t with the card itself. If the card is working, back up all the data on it, then put it back in the U11 and format it. That should fix the problem. Afterward, you can put your files back on the card. Problem solved!

PC doesn’t recognize HTC U11 issue

If you plug your phone into your PC and it isn’t recognized, don’t worry, there’s a fix for that. Make sure you’ve got HTC Sync Manager installed, that you’ve checked this list and that USB drivers on your computer are up to date. Also, if one USB port doesn’t recognize the device, try using a USB 2.0 port instead of a USB 3.0 port if possible, as this has worked for some users. Once you’ve tried all these things, you’ll be able to transfer files via USB with your PC and HTC U11.

HTC U11 WiFi connectivity problems

With any new phone, you’re likely to have some issue with WiFi connectivity at first. If they persist, it becomes a real problem. If the WiFi signal drops regularly and reconnects slowly, it’s time to troubleshoot. Try turning off your router and your phone, and after 30 seconds, turn the back on and allow them to reconnect. Or, try forgetting the connection you’re having trouble with, then enter the password and try connecting again. And finally, make sure you turn off Power Saving in the Settings menu. That should fix the problem, and if not, you can contact customer service and request a replacement if necessary.

Android Nougat problems and their solutions

Nougat installation problems

Having problems installing the Android Nougat update on your phone? First, you should make sure your phone is fully charged and connected to a stable Wi-Fi network before you try to download it. Next, you’ll have to patiently wait for the update to install. The first time the phone tries to reboot after the installation, it might be exceptionally slow. This usually is nothing to worry about, but if it just hangs there for a long time, you may want to try wiping the system cache in Recovery mode.

Reboot into recovery mode by holding down the power, volume up and home buttons at once. You’ll see your manufacturer’s logo pop up and then from the recovery menu you can use the volume up or down button to select Wipe cache partition and press the power button to execute the command. Then you can restart the phone and try to install the update again. If you’re still having problems, you might have to resort to a factory reset – just don’t forget to back up your data first.

Nougat battery drain

If your battery life has been suffering since you updated to Android Nougat, you’re not alone. It may seem counter-intuitive for an update which is meant to optimize battery usage to actually cause it to drain faster, but it can sometimes be the case. Don’t worry: There’s a solution!

Once you’ve updated to Nougat, go to the Google Play Store and update all the apps on your phone so they are compatible with the new version of Android you’ve just installed. Then, clear the app caches and the system cache (as described in the previous tip) to get rid of old data. This little spring cleaning should do the trick to fixing Nougat battery life issues.

Here’s the fastest way to clear the caches of all your apps at once: Go to Settings > Storage and USB > Cached data, then tap OK to clear the cache of all your apps. If the problem persists, factory reset your phone (after you’ve backed up your data of course).

Nougat Wi-Fi connectivity problems

If your Wi-Fi connectivity has gotten noticeably spottier since installing Android Nougat, you can try turning Wi-Fi off and back on again. If that doesn’t work, turn off Wi-Fi, then reboot your phone and try to check it again. If that still doesn’t work, ‘forget’ the Wi-Fi network in question, then try reconnecting. If you must, you can reset your network settings in Settings > Backup and reset > Network settings reset.

Bluetooth problems are pesky, and sometimes it’s hard to pin down the cause. The first thing you should try is turning Bluetooth off then on again. If that doesn’t work, ‘forget’ the connection that’s causing you trouble and try to connect it again. If that still doesn’t work, boot into Safe Mode so third party apps can’t interfere with the connection – this will help you figure out if a particular app is causing the problem, rather than the updated OS itself.

Nougat cellular data issues

If you’re having Nougat mobile data connectivity problems, try to switch your cellular data off then on again. If that doesn’t work, restart your phone and re-enter your SIM pin code (if you have one). If your phone comes with a SIM card, you can also try removing it from the tray and re-inserting it. If all else fails, contact your carrier to see if it’s a widespread issue with the Nougat update on devices sharing the same network.

Nougat random rebooting problem

If you’re experiencing random reboots after the Nougat update, you’re not alone. A number of users have experienced boot loop and random rebooting issues with Nougat. The Nexus 5X, in particular, seems to have a hardware issue with a small number of devices which causes boot looping. For other devices, though, it’s purely a software issue which can be fixed without having to send it out for repair. Funnily enough, restarting your device may fix the random restarting problem. If the issue persists after that, try clearing your app caches and data.

Nougat GPS issues

Nougat users have been complaining about GPS issues since the updates began to roll out. To fix the problem, turn off GPS, then turn it back on to get a fresh connection. If that doesn’t work, try restarting your phone. Also, you can also try recalibrating your GPS, or clearing the cache of Google Maps (or whichever mapping app you use).

Nougat black screen issues

Some Nougat users, particularly those with Galaxy S7 devices, have been getting a black screen on their phones. This bug was also present with Android Marshmallow, and leads to an unresponsive blank display. The first thing to do is turn off the phone using the power button, then turn it back on. If the screen still doesn’t work, there’s still hope.

Try rebooting into recovery mode by holding down the power, volume up and home buttons at once. You’ll see your manufacturer’s logo pop up and then from the recovery menu you can use the volume up button to select Reboot system and press the power button to reboot the phone.

Nougat audio issues

To fix Nougat sound problems, try restarting the device after an update. Also, don’t forget to check if your speaker grilles are clean and clear. If the problem is happening with a specific app, update that app to see if the problem persists.

Nougat not connecting to PC

If you’re having USB connectivity issues after the Nougat update, it’s most likely because you haven’t chosen the correct option in the settings. The default setting is USB charging mode, which means you can’t see files when you plug into your PC.

When you connect your phone to your PC via USB, a notification will pop up which says “Connected for charging.” Tap this and you’ll see a number of options, of which you’ll want to select MTP for transferring media files. This will allow you to copy files back and forth from your PC to your phone via USB. 

Nougat app crashing and instability

If apps are misbehaving, unstable or crashing since you update to Nougat, you likely just need to go the the Play Store and update your apps to the newest versions which are compatible with Nougat. If that doesn’t solve the problem, clear the app cache and data to get rid of leftover data. If that still doesn’t work, try uninstalling the problematic app and reinstalling it to really get a clean slate.

Samsung Galaxy S8 audio problems

Users in Samsung’s Community Forum have recently been reporting that they are having audio issues with their Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ devices. Users state that the sound / audio of their S8 or S8+ cuts off at random when they are playing music, streaming YouTube videos or playing games. As far as we understand, this issue seems to only affect the sound coming out of the speakers, not the audio from the headphones. Users are speculating that the audio issues are due to loose wiring, a theory backed up by the fact that if you apply some pressure just above the speakers, the audio comes back on. Apparently, if you violently shake the S8 reproduces the same problem. If this is true, then it would definitely point to a hardware issue – meaning a simple software update won’t fix the audio issue on the Galaxy S8.

So is there a solution to fix the Galaxy S8 audio issues?

Samsung has responded to some users that it could be an app or a software that’s causing the issues and recommended them to put their devices in safe mode for 1-2 hours and monitor the audio usage. This apparently did not fix the problem though. 

Another user pointed out that both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge had similar issues with the audio cutting out and recommended the following solution:

Enable the developer options on your Galaxy S8 if you haven’t already done so. Go into the Developer Options -> scroll down to Media -> and toggle Prevent USB audio routing on. This apparently solved the audio issue on the Galaxy S7 and might prove to work for the S8 and S8+ as well.

Samsung Galaxy S8 rebooting issue

Over the past few weeks, a number of users have been reporting on the Samsung Community forum that their Galaxy S8 and S8+ devices keep on restarting. One quick fix is to do a factory reset, but the problem appears to resurface after a few hours. A few users have reportedly tried rebooting to resolve this issue, but discovered that after this their phones will not turn back on again at all.

There hasn’t been any official confirmation from the company on this issue, but the indicators are that this could be related to the microSD card. Some users have reported seeing a “Transfer files to SD card” notification after restarting the phone, whereas others have said they are experiencing even more problems after they transferred or removed all the apps from the card.

Samsung has reportedly advised any affected customers to send in their devices for repair, exchange or for a full refund. That said, to date there has been no official statement from the company on this issue. This is a problem that they will ultimately need to respond to, as this is a significant fault: constant restarting on any smartphone will eventually make the device completely useless. Hopefully, all that will be needed is a software update to resolve this fault, but in the absence of any word from Samsung it might be time for us to prepare for the worst. 

Samsung Galaxy S8 display problems

One of the major selling points for both the Galaxy S8 and S8+ is their super AMOLED displays, which gives both devices very accurate color representations. It was also here that Samsung had its first reported issues with the S8 and S8+, as numerous users reported via Reddit that there was “bleeding” on the display resulting in discolored, red-tinted screens.

According to one Reddit user, this issue is nothing more than a limitation with Samsung’s OLED panels. To get even more technical, this is the result of Samsung’s use of low-temperature polycrystalline silicon instead of a material like indium gallium zinc oxide.

Samsung has already responded to this issue by distributing a software update, which regulates the color balance of the device. The company says it is simply offering “a further enhanced ability to adjust the color setting to their preference,” so once you receive the update you can adjust the display even more than when you first took it out of the box. Whether or not this actually goes someway to resolving the issue remains to be seen. We haven’t had a chance to test these ourselves yet, but as soon as we have we’ll let you know if the update is the answer to your prayers or the thing of nightmares. Keep watching this space. 

Samsung Galaxy S8 home button issues

Quite a few Galaxy S8 owners have recently been voicing complaints that their home button seems to be malfunctioning. After locking the phone it begins to vibrate and turns the screen back on, prompting a password unlock (either passcode or fingerprint scan). Apparently this issue occurs both immediately after locking the phone, as well as occurring after a delay of a few seconds.

Users in the XDA forum have discussed the issue, and it appears even when apps are disabled in accessibility and when the passcode options has been removed. It seems like the problem is related to the sensitivity settings of the home button. The Galaxy S8 doesn’t have a physical home button anymore, so it could very well be somethings that’s fixed by a simple software update. It’s worth noting that at present the home button issue seems to only be occuring on Galaxy S8 devices.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Wi-Fi disconnecting and reconnecting

Quite a few users have been reporting that the Wifi connection of the Galaxy S8 keeps on dropping.  It had been suggested to try out different Wifi frequencies but the problem persisted with both 2.4ghz and 5ghz signals.

Wifi signals disconnecting and reconnecting were also an issue reported by Galaxy S7 users, many of whom had suggested clearing the cache (and some even recommended a hard reset). Clearing the cache worked for some users, but not all.

The Wifi issue has been acknowledged by Samsung / various carries, and a patch is in progress. If you own an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S8, you will receive the patch directly from Samsung. Otherwise you’ll have to wait for your carrier to push out the patch for the Wifi problem.  

Samsung Galaxy S8 bluetooth connection issues

Apparently multiple Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ users are having issues with their bluetooth connection. When the device is connected to bluetooth speakers and headsets, the audio breaks up. Other users are reporting that when they are listening to music via bluetooth speakers, the bluetooth connections just disconnects.

Samsung has acknowledged the bluetooth issues with the S8 and S8+ and had rolled out a patch in the United Arab Emirates first (most likely as a test) and is now planning on rolling out the bluetooth fix globally. If you have an unlocked device, you will receive the OTA directly from samsung, while branded devices will get the fix through their carriers.

The Galaxy S8 fingerprint scanner seems to be causing several issues. The main problem at the moment seems to be that the fingerprint scanner can’t or won’t always recognize notification gestures or fingerprints. Some users report that the fingerprint sensor was basically acting dead, refusing to recognize multiple saved fingerprints to unlock the S8.

A temporary fix to this seems to be performing a simple reboot, though it’s been reported that the issue of the fingerprint scanner not working comes up again. Users in the Samsung forum have stated that they spoke to Samsung support who said this was a software, rather than a hardware issue which should be fixed in an upcoming update.

Samsung Galaxy S8 face detection not working

Both Galaxy S8 and S8+ users have reported that after receiving an update in late April, the face detection has stopped working. Regardless how often a face is registered, the face detection refuses to work. The usual recommendations were made – clearing cache, rebooting, and making sure that all apps are up to date, though none of them had fixed the issue.

Samsung hasn’t made any statements regarding the broken face detection, but it clearly seems to be a software issue.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Edge Lighting not working

There seem to be various issues surrounding the Edge Lighting not working.  In theory, Edge Lightning should light up the edge of the screen when a message or call is received. You should also be able to color code up to five contacts. Some users have reported that the edge lightning doesn’t work with any app or call, and that it’s not possible to assign colors to contacts. While many seem to think that this might have been a single carrier issue, users across the carrier spectrum have corroborated similar issues.  It seems like there could also be an issue that edge lightning only works with the Samsung Messaging app and not the one that your carrier provides – though this is still unconfirmed.

The first solution would be to go to Settings > Display > Edge screen, then tap and hold down on “Edge Lighting” (make sure that it’s set to “Always on”) and then tap on “Manage notifications.” The notifications are turned off by default so you will need to turn them on individually.

Another issue that users have reported is that Edge Lighting works when the display is turned on, but refuses to work when it’s turned off.

A possible solution here is to simply switch off the “keep screen turned off” in the display settings. To do this go into the Settings > Display and then scroll down to “Keep screen turned off” and toggle it off.

This doesn’t seem to fix the issue for everyone one and, according to the Samsung forum, the company is currently looking into this issue.

A useful reminder is that for the Edge Lighting feature to work, your phone needs to be laying face down on the surface.

Samsung Pay freezing phone

Samsung Pay apparently has a bug which causes it to freeze up your phone. This issue seems to mostly occur when you try to “swipe to unlock” the display, and Samsung Pay then attempts to show your “preferred card.” This then causes the phone to freeze up between both actions. Either your are then forced to wait until the phone figures out what it wants to do, or soft reset it.  

Uninstalling and reinstalling Samsung Pay doesn’t fix this issue. The root of the problem seems to be that Samsung Pay incorrectly registers the swipe to unlock gesture, which then causes the mix up. Several users in the Samsung forum reported that removing/not having the favorite card selected seems to fix the issues, though it limited the usefulness of the Samsung Pay app.

Samsung Galaxy S8 infinity wallpaper not working

If you’re having with the infinity wallpaper not working on your home screen, lock screen and always on display, it seems like there’s an easy solution.

Go into Settings > Lock screen and security and then tap on the “Always on” display. You’ll need to select the clock format that you want, which then brings you into a new menu where you can change the clock style, color and background. Tap on “Background” and make sure to select “None.” This should enable the infinity wallpaper to work on all your display settings.

My Knox not working the Samsung Galaxy S8

Several users have tried downloading the My Knox app on the Galaxy S8 only to receive the message that the app isn’t compatible with their phone.

The answer to this dilemma is that as of 2017, My Knox won’t be compatible with Samsung Galaxy phones and will be replaced with Secure Folder.

Samsung Galaxy S8 wireless charging paused

Both Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ users have reported that they are encountering instances that when they are attempting to wirelessly charge, all they get is a blinking “charging paused”.  Users are also complaining that docks and pads which they bought in combination with their Galaxy S6 and S7 devices don’t work for the Galaxy S8.

While the cable itself doesn’t seem to make any difference for the pad, it seems like the power brick (the thing that goes into the electrical outlet) seems to be the culprit. Users in Samsung forum have explained which combinations worked for them, and it seems like there’s no clear pattern – just the fact that some power bricks will power wireless charging pads and fast charge in samsung docking stations and others won’t.

The only real solution at this time seems to be that you should only use wireless charging pads and docks that are explicitly marketed for the Galaxy S8.

“The iris sensor is not responding. Try again later”

Multiple reports have surfaced up in various forums that the iris sensor of both the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ is throwing up an error. It seems to crop up most frequently when trying to unlock the phone, using Samsung Pay or Secure Folder. In those instances it produces the error message “The iris sensor is not responding. Try again later”.

Samsung is aware of the issue, but no patch or fix has surfaced yet. Users report that restarting seems to be the only solution to temporarily fix this issue, though the problem will resurface hour later again.

Text message sound notification not working on the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+

Are you not receiving sound notifications when you get a text message? The easiest solution is as follows:

Go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Notifications and then make sure that this is set to “Allowed.” None of the other notification settings work if this isn’t set properly. If this does not fix the issue, make sure to backup your data and perform a hard reset.

MyFitbit device doesn’t charge

How strange! You’ve plugged in your device to charge but nothing happens. This could be down to several things, particularly the quality of your USB cable or the USB port on your PC, so take a look at those two components first before seeking a more in depth explanation.

Depending on the model, you’ll see one or several LEDs light up. If none of them light up, your device/battery is probably damaged and you should get in contact with the manufacturer to work something out with your warranty. Although this appears to be obvious at first glance, don’t forget that your connected devices need time to charge, so don’t expect to find your device fully charged after just a half-hour of charging. If your device is completely dead, several minutes of charge are often needed before the bracelet will light up again.

My Fitbit device and smartphone aren’t synchronizing

Synchronizing your device is done through the Fitbit app using Bluetooth. As most after-sale customer services will tell you, check if everything is connected before doing anything. Likewise, check whether everything is running smoothly in terms of software: give the Fitbit app the necessary permissions and check that nothing is blocking the connection.

Once that’s done, check that everything is well set up so that the synchronization can be maintained. Without this verification step, the connection may break after a while. To avoid this, ensure that you have activated the Always Connected and All-day Sync modes in your account settings.

The screen and/or bracelet of my Fitbit is broken

Fitbit offers several ranges of connected bracelets and, in general, they’re pretty good. It just takes a spot of bad luck to be the one to encounter a problem: you might trip or fall and break the screen, or you might be seriously unlucky and have received a defective model where the bracelet has broken after just a few days of use. In theory, you can return your device up to 45 days after purchase (for any reason) but “the returned products must be in a good physical state (not broken or damaged)”.

You can obviously take advantage of the warranty but only under certain conditions, as with all warranties, assuming responsibility for an “accident” is important. In other words, if you damage the device yourself in some way, it can’t be refunded. All Fitbit devices should be under warranty for a year. This warranty “doesn’t cover integrated software” and only applies to “the original owner of the product purchased from an authorized vendor or sales channel”. You’ll find more information on the subject on the official Fitbit page about return policy and warranty.

My Fitbit device hurts me and/or leaves marks on my skin

Fitbit offers several types of bracelet materials: leather, metal, nylon and elastomer. While it’s a rare occurrence, some skin types can have an allergic reaction to one or several of these materials, particularly if you have dry skin. If you see that your skin is becoming irritated, take the bracelet off immediately. You can then contact Fitbit to exchange the type of bracelet.

Fitbit bracelets are waterproof but your skin can react badly to the combination of water and the bracelet material, particularly with perspiration. Fitbit provides more advice on the official Fitbit page on wear and care.

My Fitbit device doesn’t receive notifications from my smartphone

Some Fitbit devices receive notifications directly from a smartphone, like smartwatches. You can carry out a “Windows” solution, i.e. turning it off and on again to see if it works. But it’s better to look for the source of the problem: are your two devices actually connected? If they are, deactivate Bluetooth then reactivate it. How far apart are the devices from one another? A Bluetooth connection has a limited reach (apart from Bluetooth 5 but we we’re a little while off that yet). Are the notifications activated in the app? Check this in the configurations.
